Aerobic exercise prevents apoptosis in skeletal muscles of high-fat-fed ovariectomized rats

[Purpose] Aging and obesity are associated with skeletal muscle atrophy-related signaling pathways, including apoptosis. Many studies have shown that menopause is associated with an increased risk of skeletal muscle atrophy. There is an increasing need to develop strategies that will improve the risk of skeletal muscle atrophy through exercise interventions. However, the effect of exercise on estrogen deficiency-induced apoptosis in skeletal muscles is poorly understood. Therefore, we examined the effects of low-intensity exercise on ovariectomy (OVX)-induced apoptosis of the soleus and plantaris muscles. [Methods] The ovaries of all female Sprague-Dawley rats aged 8 weeks, were surgically removed to induce postmenopausal status. The rats were randomly divided into three treatment groups: (1) NSV (normal-diet- sedentary-OVX); (2) HSV (high-fat-diet-sedentary-OVX); and (3) HEV (high-fat-diet-exercise-OVX). The exercise groups were regularly running for 30-40 min/day at 15- 18 m/minute, five times/week, for eight weeks. [Results] The mRNA levels of Bax significantly decreased in the exercised soleus muscle, and caspase-3 decreased in the plantaris. The skeletal muscle TUNEL-positive apoptotic cells in the high-fat-diet-sedentary OVX rats improved in the treadmill exercise group. Additionally, nuclear caspase-3 levels decreased in the treadmill exercise group compared to those in both sedentary groups. These results suggest that low-intensity treadmill exercise prevents skeletal muscle apoptosis in HFD-fed OVX rats. [Conclusion] Induction of HFD in estrogen-deficient mice increased apoptosis in skeletal muscle, which could also be alleviated by low-intensity aerobic exercise. These results may indicate a crucial therapeutic effect of treadmill exercise in preventing skeletal muscle apoptosis in menopausal or post-menopausal women.
식이성 폴리페놀 (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate가 mouse C2C12 myoblast 분화에 미치는 영향

In the present investigation, we studied the modulating effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) on the differentiation of mouse C2C12 myoblasts. We found that the strong inhibitory effect of EGCG on DNA methyltransferase-mediated DNA methylation induced transdifferentiation of C2C12 myoblasts into smooth muscle cells demonstrated by both morphological changes and immunofluorescent staining. C2C12 myoblasts treated with EGCG for 4 days expressed smooth muscle ${\alpha}-actin$ protein. Real-time PCR data revealed that smooth muscle ${\alpha}-actin$ mRNA was induced by EGCG treated C2C12 myoblasts in a concentration-dependent manner. Smooth muscle ${\alpha}-actin$ mRNA concentration increased 330% and 490% after 2 and 3 days of 50 ${\mu}M$ of EGCG treatment. The expression of another smooth muscle marker, transgelin, mRNA was also increased up to 9-fold by 4 days of EGCG treatment compared with control in a concentration-dependent manner. These results suggested that C2C12 enables to transdifferentiate into smooth muscle when gene expression patterns are changed by the inhibition of DNA methylation induced by EGCG. In conclusion, transdifferentiation of C2C12 myoblasts into smooth muscle is resulted from the modulating effects of EGCG on DNA methylation which subsequently results in changing the expression pattern of several genes playing a critical role in the differentiation of C2C12 myoblasts.

In this article, we reviewed properties of reclaimed tidal soil and fate of nitrogen in its soil. The results were summarized as followings. Most of the soil derived from the fluvio-marine deposit were silly textured soils. The EC of the Saemanguem soil were ranged from 14.7 to 33.9 dS $m^{-1}$, pH was 7.7. The organic matter content was low with 1.5 g $kg^{-1}$. The cation exchange capacity was 7.2 cmol $kg^{-1}$ and exchangeable sodium percent was high with range 45.1 % to 56.2%. High sodium concentration caused poor drainage. The salinity significantly affects efficiency of N fertilizer in reclaimed tidal soil.

Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of psychological empowerment on the relationship of middle managers’ authentic leadership with the staff’s organizational commitment and job satisfaction at the Local Medical Center. Methods : The data were collected from 273 staff from the four Local Medical Centers in Chungnam Province using self-administered questionnaires. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression with the SPSS 23.0 program. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Sobel test. Results : Middle managers’ authentic leadership had a significant positive effect on the job satisfaction and psychological empowerment of staff. Additionally, psychological empowerment showed mediating effects in the relationships among authentic leadership and organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Conclusions : To promote staff's organizational commitment and job satisfaction, it is necessary to build effective strategies to develop middle managers’ authentic leadership and to promote empowering programs for the staff.
집단 작업 활동 프로그램이 지역아동센터 아동의 시지각 및 운동기능에 미치는 효과

Objective : The current study investigated the effectiveness of group occupational activity program in increasing visual-perception and motor function of children in Community Children Center. Methods : Five children aged between 6-9 years in a community children center participated in the group occupational activity program. The program was designed to facilitate children's visual-perception and motor function based on play occupations. We examined performances of MVPT-3 and BOT-2 before and after the program. Results : Children who participated in the group program showed significant increases in visual perception and motor function. Conclusion : The study revealed the effectiveness of group occupational activity program in promoting visual perception and motor function of children in a community children center, which suggests the possibility of application of occupational activity toward low-income children in the community. 목적 : 본 연구는 집단 작업 활동 프로그램이 지역아동센터 아동들의 시지각 및 운동기능을 향상시킬 수 있는지알아보았다. 연구방법 : 지역아동센터를 이용하는 만 6∼9세 학령기 아동 5명을 대상으로 집단 작업 활동 프로그램을 실시하였다. 프로그램은 놀이를 기반으로 시지각 및 운동기능을 촉진할 수 있는 요소를 포함하였고, 주 1회(90분) 총 9회기로 진행되었다. 아동의 시지각 및 운동기능에 대한 프로그램 효과를 알아보기 위하여 프로그램 전과 후에 Motor Free Visual Perception Test-Third Edition(MVPT-3)와 Bruiniks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency 2nd Edition(BOT-2) 평가를 실시하여 두 시점의 평가 결과를 비교하였다. 결과 : 집단 작업 활동 프로그램은 지역아동센터 아동의 시지각 및 운동기능을 향상시키는 효과가 있었다. 결론 : 본 연구는 지역아동센터 아동들의 시지각 및 운동기능의 발달 촉진에 있어서 집단 작업 활동 프로그램의효과를 보여주었다. 이러한 경험적 증거는 발달을 촉진하는 작업 활동이 지역사회에 적용되고 확대될 수 있는근거를 제시한다
북방전복(Haliotis discus hannai) 난모세포의 미세구조적 분화

The purpose of this study was to provide basic information on sexual maturity and reproductive biology for the management of biological resources in abalone Haliotis discus hannai. The nucleus of the oogonium occupied about 42% of the cytoplasm, and had a distinctive basophilic chromatin. The cytoplasm of previtellogenic oocytes was homogeneous and the size of nuclear pores increased. Fine granular and vacuolar yolk granules were observed in the cytoplasm of the initial vitellogenic oocyte. In this stage, the egg stalk and jelly membrane began to develop. The nucleus of the active vitellogenic oocyte was located near the animal pole. Yolk granules were strongly acidophilic. Lampbrush chromosomes were observed in the nucleus and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Annulate lamellae developed in the cytoplasm. The shape of the ripe oocyte was rounded polygonal. The size of ripe oocytes was 202.9±21.40×142.1±18.82 μm and the thickness of the jelly membrane was 10.1±1.52 μm. These results show that yolk accumulation in H. discus hannai is based on two methods: exogenous accumulation, through the egg stalk, and endogenous accumulation, through intracellular organelles. Management of biological resources will be necessary when oocytes predominate after the active vitellogenic stage.
갯벌지역 고해상도 지형정보 구축을 위한 항공 라이다와 UAV 데이터 통합 활용에 관한 연구

To preserve and restore tidal flats and prevent safety accidents, it is necessary to construct tidal flat topographic information including the exact location and shape of tidal creeks. In the tidal flats where the field surveying is difficult to apply, airborne LiDAR surveying can provide accurate terrain data for a wide area. On the other hand, we can economically obtain relatively high-resolution data from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) surveying. In this study, we proposed the methodology to generate high-resolution topographic information of tidal flats effectively by integrating airborne LiDAR and UAV point clouds. For the purpose, automatic ICP (Iterative Closest Points) registration between two different datasets was conducted and tidal creeks were extracted by applying CSF (Cloth Simulation Filtering) algorithm. Then, we integrated high-density UAV data for tidal creeks and airborne LiDAR data for flat grounds. DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and tidal flat area and depth were generated from the integrated data to construct high-resolution topographic information for large-scale tidal flat map creation. As a result, UAV data was registered without GCP (Ground Control Point), and integrated data including detailed topographic information of tidal creeks with a relatively small data size was generated. 갯벌의 보존과 복원 및 안전사고 예방을 위해서, 갯골의 정확한 위치와 형상을 포함하는 갯벌 지형정보 구축이 필요하다. 현장 측량이 어려운 갯벌 지역에 대해, 항공 라이다 측량은 넓은 지역에 대한 정확한 위치정보 데이터의 취득이 가능하며, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) 측량은 상대적으로 공간해상력이 우수한 데이터를 경제적으로 제공할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 효과적인 갯벌 지형정보 구축을 위하여 항공 라이다와 UAV 포인트 클라우드 간의 데이터 통합을 수행하고, 갯골의 세부 지형을 갱신하는 방법을 제안하였다. 이를 위해 ICP (Iterative Closest Point) 알고리즘을 활용하여 두 이종 데이터를 자동 정합하고, 지면 필터링 기법인 CSF (Cloth Simulation Filtering)를 활용하여 갯골을 추출한 후, 갯골 영역에 대한 고점밀도 UAV 데이터와 평평한 지면에 대한 항공 라이다 데이터를 통합하였다. 통합된 데이터로부터 DEM (Digital Elevation Model) 및 갯골의 영역과 깊이 정보를 생성하여 대축척 갯벌 지도 제작을 위한 고해상도 지형정보를 구축하였다. 연구결과, 제안한 방법을 통해 GCP (Ground Control Point) 없이 UAV 데이터를 기하보정하고, 갯골의 세부 지형정보를 포함하면서 데이터 용량은 상대적으로 작은 통합 데이터를 생성할 수 있었다.
