Ever since first defined by Lakoff (1973) as “words whose job is to make things fuzzier or less fuzzy” (p. 471), the concept of hedges has consequently widened in a way to modify the speaker/writer’s commitment to the truth-value of a whole proposition (Markkanen & Schröder, 1997) and eventually to realize an interactional and communicative strategy called hedging, a product of social forces. In the latter approach where hedges are treated as purposive imprecise language, hedging signals distance, “unobtrusively injects an author’s personal view into his communication” (Dubois, 1987, p. 539), and protects the writer’s reputation by avoiding absolute statements. Such tentativeness eludes personal responsibility for statements, reducing the author’s “degree of liability” (Hübler, 1983, p. 18). Hedges have crucially been concerned with academics whose claims are inevitably framed as tentative. They enable writers “to present unproven claims with caution and to enter a dialogue with their audience” (Hyland, 1998a, p. 6). With the growing interest in interlanguage pragmatics and the “inseparability of language and culture” (Roberts, 1998, p. 109), intercultural communicative awareness and the ability to use pragmatic knowledge strategically have further been highlighted in second language learning scene. Despite its significant status in academic society, however, interpreting and using hedges appropriately have repeatedly been reported to be difficult for learners, especially in academic writing where EFL writers tend to unfold a collection of facts in a direct and impersonal manner (Bloor & Bloor, 1991; Dudley-Evans, 1991; Hyland, 2000a; Kamimura & Oi, 2006; Oh, 2007; Skelton, 1988). The present study was motivated in search of diagnostic analysis on the problematic areas of hedges for Korean EFL learners and thus aims to provide suggestions for ways to guide them toward the skillful use of hedging. The data used for the research were extracted from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English (ICNALE). From a total of 1,300 participants, 2,600 essays were collected and examined. The participants were composed of four language groups: The Korean learner group along with two other learner groups with East Asian native language backgrounds, and the native speaker group from five different English-speaking countries. All the participants of the study were classified into one of the four English proficiency levels (or score bands) defined in this study, which has enabled the analysis of the effect of proficiency factor as well as language factor on the pattern of hedging usage. The results resonate with findings from previous studies that native speakers employ hedging markers at a higher frequency than ESL/EFL learner writers do (Aijmer, 2002; Baumgarten & House, 2010; Hyland, 1995; Skelton, 1988). The findings direct attention to three aspects of EFL writing with regard to their usage and pattern of hedging expressions. The EFL learners were found to be dependent on a restricted number of hedging devices than the native speakers for the very nature of the target language itself, including the semantic, pragmatic, form complexity, and saliency. The rise in EFL proficiency was accompanied by the broader range of hedging devices available to the learners, although it did not prove to affect the frequency in a consistent manner. Finally, the Korean learners, whom we refer to as the learner group in focus, were observed to be strong and assertive in tone, which points to their lack of experience in manipulation of expressing tentativeness in their claims. Another problem in the area of stylistic aspects was diagnosed in terms of mixed use of written and spoken registers. Several theoretical and pedagogical implications for EFL teaching and assessment can be drawn from the present study. First, the present study provides a piece of evidence that supports the proficiency impact on the use of two lexical pairs. Second, the correlation of proficiency with the lexical pairs can possibly contribute to the development of automated writing evaluation system, particularly to the identification of the features of styles that can be quantified and used in automated scoring. Third, explicit instruction on hedging is needed in EFL settings, an aspect which has largely been neglected in Korean English classrooms. Lastly, regular English writing practice sessions should take place in order to familiarize the learners with the stylistic features present in academic genres of discourse.
This study analyzes community dance as a practice that reflects the community nature of the respective society. To this end, it sheds light on Rudolph Laban's Movement Choir, which is the beginning of community dance, and analyzes the changes in community and practice that are found in the process of transition to modern community dance. Furthermore, this study examines the social role that contemporary community dance practice aims to perform. In terms of contemporary practice, community dance can be defined as "participatory dance activities by non-experts under the guidance or cooperation of dance professionals." Community dance participants can communicate with community members through these activities to inspire individual achievement or to achieve healing effects. Community dance is distinguished from professional dance in terms of dancing subjects, the purpose of movement, and evaluation, and is distinctive from folk dance and ballroom dance as it does not require conventionally defined skills or steps. Community dance can be seen as a dance practice that emerged in the 20th century, based on Laban's theory, which originated in Germany and was synthesized in the UK under the influence of American post-modern dance. Laban, who founded the Non-Professional Dance movement in the early 20th century, expanded the dancing body to non-expert students and workers, unlike previous dances, and embodied the ideal community through formation and choreography. In particular, the format of Movement Choir, which connects improvisation and free dancing to the collective movement, Reigen, can be seen as a unique structure in which Laban's thoughts about individuals and communities are expressed. What he emphasized was the interaction between community members, and for this reason, Movement Choir was used in areas such as education and industry and unlike works of artists, it entered the public domain where anyone could participate, not the works of artists, and acquired characteristics of a community practice. However, the fact that Movement Choir was used as a means of policy for the Nazis and Laban's history of contributing to it are pointed out as reasons why Movement Choir cannot be reproduced today. It is undeniable that the Nazis used Movement Choir format and formalized it as a community dance, and that Laban cooperated with it. However, the community that Laban and the Nazis wanted to implement through Movement Choir was different from the Nazis. If the Nazis wanted to worship the ruler through the unified movement of the group and boast the image of a strong Germany to the outside, Laban wanted to share the integrated experience of the people by having the German people dancing together. In particular, the connection between Movement Choir and modern community dance can be found in that Laban respects the unique movements of individuals and pursues communities that are created through interaction between participants rather than subordination to society. Indeed, Movement Choir promoted individuals to follow leaders and melt into the whole rather than pursue complete individuality, and limited participants to healthy young people centered around the notion of the nation as a community. Such facts can be seen as the limitation of Movement Choir. The modern community dance has evolved to reflect on and overcome this. Community dance, which succeeded Movement Choir, has developed to reflect changes in the concept of community shared by society, encompassing various members of society that have been excluded by expanding the concept of community based on diversity beyond nationality, gender, race and age. As a result, the purpose of community dance has expanded to not only enhance the sense of belonging but also to select and create communities on their own. Community dance is widely used in various areas of society in that it aims to achieve individual transformation and further change the community in which the individual belongs. As a result, the social role of community dance is gradually emphasized, which is used for remedial activities and for mental healing and physical therapy, and the practical nature is strengthened, for example communicating with the disabled through dance or trying to overcome generational differences. In line with this trend, consideration of the political characteristics of community dance is required. As Movement Choir, collective movement of citizens can be a powerful means of delivering messages, so delicate consideration and review of political and social characteristics are needed not only for practitioners but also for participants in community dance practice. Today, community dance is presented for various purposes and forms, including experiments and performances by famous artists, state-funded welfare policies, and means of treatment and self-development. This study sought to identify the nature of community dance and discover values that run thorough community dance practices in various aspects and factors that current practices should overlook. By examining changes in the notion of community and analyzing aspects of practice in community dance, we will be able to reason how it should develop in the future, and further produce critical reflections both in domains of research and practice.

Mix & Match lexically means 'putting together things matchless' or 'pairing things unbalanced'. It is a new method of coordination expressed in contemporary fashion that could not be thought of in the past, used together with the term of Crossover or Fusion in which two elements are mixed with each other. Its phenomenon began to appear earlier in the field of plastic art including architecture or interior than in fashion. We have already been too familiar with the match of classic furniture with modern wallpaper. Its phenomenon can be seen as having occurred against an extension of deform, polycentrism, and a multicultural phenomenon of postmodernism beginning to appear from the 1990s. It can be said that it is the intermediate stage which plays the role as a bridge in the phenomenon by 'a style of wearing clothes matching Matchless, that is, literally totally matchless items with each other'. In fact, it is said to be 'putting together matchless items', but has its own rules. For example, it is a method of coordination requiring many techniques including 'color mixing, pattern matching', 'pattern mixing, material matching', and 'material mixing, pattern matching' for each of a jacket and slacks. However, its phenomenon began to remove forms by degrees and future fashion will approach to 'Matchless'. The public are used to its phenomenon universalized very much in the contemporary fashion of the 21st century. However, such coordination could barely be found in the 1990s. Even the past fashion had the coordination of Mix & Match by given pattern, which was very restrictive. The typical example includes a coordination of a formal, woman Chanel tweed jacket and casual denim pants. Like it, a way to express Mix & Match in the past was mainly for wearing clothes, that is, providing significance to each item in a style of other sensibility. However, the way diversified very much in contemporary fashion appears not only as a style but also as a cultural element. And it includes a form of design, material, color tone, pattern, ornament and so on. The reason why especially the phenomenon rises in the 21st century can also be found in the world situation. The basic principle about a correlation between economy and fashion that "The times good simplifies clothes, but the times bad makes them gorgeous." has already been well-known to us. Romanticism was more stressed in the economic depression in 2000 and in the 9.11 Terror in 2001, and its encounter with Sportive Look emerging from the enthusiasm for the international sports such as the World Cup or Yoga and so on changed a future-oriented style like a space suit into a form of casual wear. The encounter can be said to be the Mix & Match that appears most remarkably in contemporary fashion. Men first show Mix & Match in such a way as wearing soccer shoes or slippers instead of shoes with a classic suit. High interest in the Third World such as the Middle East, South America, India, Mongolia, Africa, Southeast Asia and the like causes Ethnic Look from getting inspiration from the countries to be matched with Romantic chiffon dress or a classic suit with Ethnic accessories. Like it, the emotional elements such as classic, casual, elegance, eroticism, and Space Look mixed with one another centering on Romantic, Sportive and Ethnic Looks are expressed in very various ways. The aesthetic features shown in the costume of Mix & Match include 'unexpectedness' of selecting and matching an item in a style unanticipated before, which is connected with 'beauty of deform' pursuing freedom not limited to any form. Also, such free form expresses 'a pursuit of practicality' unconscious of others, which is 'future-oriented' pursuing gradually light and practical things and means 'expression of avant-garde beauty'. Korean designers have already advanced much to the world stage including Paris, but their fashion shows only a mixture of Western and Korean elements, that is, a phenomenon of fusion, and does not show the Mix & Match with traditional vivid elements of Korean costume so much. Therefore, they will not have to keep abreast of the flow of fashion, but make a new attempt at well developing the traditional elements in which they will be able to well express the beauty of Korean costume unique in the world so as to foresee the flow of future fashion and lead the fashion. This study, therefore, tries to analyze the types of the phenomenon of Mix & Match expressed in contemporary fashion, explore plastic beauty by deriving plastic values from it, and further present the Mix & Match where Korean proper traditional elements are alive by using Korean traditional practical costume usable also as casual wear, and help the direction of future fashion and new fashion style to be activated.

ABSTRACT As the learning environment of museum education moves to the on-line platform in the post-corona age, this study is aimed, based on Hein's (1998) Constructivism, at exploring the possibility of‘participants-centered museum' where participants would construct the meanings for themselves in the on-line learning environment. In the participants-centered museums, participants' active participation may well be facilitated when the works provided by museum have been signified through their individual experiences. Such a signification would well be a connection between participants and museum, encouraging them to visit the museum continuously. Such a continued connection would be enabled through‘meaning-making' (Lee Yeon Soo, 2021; Hooper-Greenhill, 2000). In his book "The Participatory Museum', Simon (2015) suggests a 5-stage construction model "me-to-we" as a practical way toward the participants- centered museum. This model is designed to expand the communication and relation through individuals' meaningful experiences and participation. In this model, the higher stage one goes up, his/her meaningful experience of participation would expand socially more. However, as such a design can hardly induce the participant to go up beyond the third stage, it is limited as ‘a participatory museum'. The COVID-19 has served to shift the paradigm of museum education. After the pandemic, museums repeated closing and opening, suffering from diverse changes, and in particular, the untact socialization provided for an opportunity for the museums to computerize their learning environment. (Lee Yeon Soo, 2021). The researcher paid attention to the explosive increase of the participants who click on the on-line education contents provided for by museums since the pandemic, and thus, examined their experiences and educational meanings of the on-line educational programs. As a result, it was found that the museum programs provided on the on-line platform were simple primary information services or served to induce participants' sensuous responses. Namely, their original educational roles and meanings were rather retarded. (Baek Ryeong 2020, Han Hye Yeon 2020, Hong Hye Joo 2021). Based on such conceptions, this study was aimed at designing and developing a practical‘participatory on-line work appreciation program' centered about the participants in the post-corona age and thereby, conducting ‘a Participatory Action Research' directly in the on-line learning environment. To this end, the following study points were established; First, how should the participatory on-line work appreciation program be designed and operated? Secondly, what aspects would the new middle-aged generation participants' experience and process of the on-line educational environment have? Thirdly, what educational meanings and characteristics would the new middle-aged generation participants' experience of‘participatory on-line work appreciation program' have? Fourthly, what practical implications would‘the participatory on-line work appreciation program' have in terms of planning and implementing? And what measures should this research suggest to help the museum on-line education improved qualitatively? This study was conducted for a year and 2 months from Mar. 2021 through May, 2022. This study sampled 7 women in their 50's who were called a new middle-aged generation living in the age of corona. This study consists of 4 stages: 1) preparation and exploration, 2) program designing, 3) implementation and data collection and 4) conclusion. The researcher developed an on-line program titled "Unexpected On-line Journey_in Jeju”consisting of 8 sessions in total. The program was operated for about a month on ZOOM. The data were collected from various sources: researcher's research diary, observation diary, in-depth interview, appreciation activity paper and activity KIT, and participants' opinions recorded in a naver cafe and YouTube. The data collected were processed through 3-stages: open coding - categorization - repeated category confirmation according to the repeated comparative analysis or a kind of the qualitative research method. As a result, the subjects who participated in "Unexpected On-line Journey_in Jeju”developed as 5-stage program using the participatory design method "me-to-we”would experience higher than the 3 stages. The researcher recorded and explored the entire process of the program through participatory observation. The results of this study can be summed up as follows; first, the participatory exhibition appreciation program provided the subjects with a journey looking for themselves; Secondly, through the linkage and expansion from‘me’to‘we’, the subjects could share their experiences with each other; Thirdly, most of the participants could enhance their sense of confidence, and further, experienced an opportunity for new challenges; Fourthly, as the program proceeded, the boundary between teacher and learners would fade out to form a cooperative learning relation anew. Through this study, the importance of the on-line learning environment would be clearer in the museum education in the post-corona age. After the pandemic, the on-line education of museums would be expanded formidably in terms of quantity owing to the efforts of many museums As a result of this study, the researcher could confirm the goals of the museums in their participants-centered education programs would well be achieved. Hence, in the post-corona age, our museums are obligated to expand their on-line educational programs not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. Lastly, it is hoped that this study would be useful to the qualitative growth of the on-line museums. Key words: post-corona museum education, on-line learning, participatory museum, new middle-aged generation, participatory practical research
